Reviving the Victorian Fashion of picnicking in cemeteries, DVSS is escaping the September city heat for a cool cemetery and an Excursion on the Georgetown Loop Railway.
Please bring a picnic lunch and a blanket or portable chair for seating. (Bringing enough to share is nice, but absolutely not necessary.) We'll take a train ride either before or after lunch; the train depot is on the road to the cemetery. We might even get some touring of Silver Plume in - I hear that there's a popular watering-house in town.
The cemetery at Silver Plume is considered one of the best 19th century cemeteries in the state. It is an active cemetery, so we will expect respectful behavior and leaving the site cleaner than we found it.
Some photos are available at https://www.facebook.com/media/set/...
The cemetery is sited in a fairly typical sub-alpine landscape, so sturdy footwear is suggested.
Georgetown Loop runs steam engines on most days, so we'll keep our hopes up for low fire-danger and running steam engines. The trip is about an hour and 15 minutes, and is round-trip from either depot. https://www.georgetownlooprr.com/
